Just in time for the holidays, WordPress has given the world of content management systems a gift with its new version. While the new WordPress release actually has nothing to do with the holiday season, it will be a gift to many website managers who are finally getting the accessibility they need. With WordPress Release 3.8, you can easily add and edit content from any size screen.
That’s right! Now you can clearly see and use the WordPress dashboard of your website from your phone. How’s that for a holiday treat?!
Much of the new WordPress Release 3.8 focuses on creating a smooth experience for someone using the WordPress dashboard to upload a photo, approve a blog comment or edit the home page of their website. Not only can you do so from any type of device — desktop, tablet, mobile — pages will load more quickly. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a tablet or dial-up in Timbuktu, your experience adding content to your website will be better.
Hello World! A Responsive WordPress Dashboard
A primary source of frustration for many website managers has been the difficulty associated with adding and editing content on the go. In our 24/7/365 world, we all need the ability to easily manage and edit a website, even if we’re at a coffee shop or a concert. Being out of the office means we’re relying on a tablet, if we’re lucky, but more typically merely our phone. In the past, trying to update a WordPress website from such a device has been problematic, at best.
That problem now is a thing of the past! The WordPress dashboard in 3.8 totally adjusts to accommodate the size of any screen you’re using. Along those lines, the Toolbar is improved. As your screen becomes smaller, the buttons become larger. You can actually now touch them and make them work on your phone! We can hear your screams of joy.
What’s In a Name? Meet Parker
We think the name of the new WordPress Release 3.8 — “Parker” — is worth mentioning. It’s a nod to jazz great Charlie Parker. We view the shout-out to the American saxophonist and composer as reference to the intended design aesthetic. Dubbed “fresh, uncluttered design” aimed at “clarity and simplicity.” If that doesn’t also sound like Jazz…well, we’re not sure what does!
Referred to as “the most beautiful WordPress yet,” the new user interface is called a “modern new design.” We call the new and improved dashboard clean. Kinda like good jazz, no?
Let’s Talk Font
The text on the dashboard also will look different because the font has changed. Now the dashboard uses Open Sans, which is an open-source font, just like WordPress itself. It was selected because it is readable across all devices, from your desktop to your phone.
Pages Load Faster
Here’s something else to love. You’ll notice pages load faster, no matter if you’re accessing the dashboard from home or Honalulu on a handheld. How? Icons are now vector-based, which means they easily adapt to various size screens. Plus, they load faster than the old pixel method.
Pick A Color, Any Color
Almost as much fun as walking the midway at the fair, WordPress 3.8 lets you deviate if you’re not a fan of charcoal and blue. With WordPress 3.8, you’ve got color choices!
Coffee and Ectoplasm and just two of the eight color options.
Ready to Upgrade to New WordPress Release? Not So Fast
Remember, you won’t get any of these new benefits until you actually upgrade to version 3.8 of WordPress.
But…please take into account the time of year before you hit the update button! For many businesses, this holiday season is the make or break time. If that’s the case, we suggest you don’t mess around with upgrading your WordPress website right this minute. Wait until things are slower and you can focus your full attention. You’d hate to break something on your website, which would prevent people from accessing your site, contacting you, or making purchases.
If those aren’t concerns, please backup your website first by making a copy of it. Be sure to do this before you upgrade to the latest version. Worst case, you always can restore to the backup if something goes awry with the update.
